

Mrs. Carra Belle Maultsby Glass, passed away Sunday, June 12, 2011 at the Carrol S. Roberson Hospice Center at the age of 96. Mrs. Glass grew up in Montrose and Raeford, she was preceded in death by her parents, John S. Maultsby and Isabelle Bethune Maultsby, a sister Estelle Powell, brothers John, Bethune, Jennings and Lee Maultsby. She played a key role in the development of commercial property in Haymont. She is believed to be one of the first female real estate developers in the area, building the first shopping center in the area. Now occupied by The Cape Fear Regional Theater the original buildings were a corner drug store, a butcher shop, a variety store, a Drs office and a movie house. Mrs. Glass attended Flora MacDonald College and later taught business classes in Tennesse and Fayetteville Tech Community Schools when first opened. She operated an antique shop in Haymount in one of her buildings. Mrs. Glass is survived by three children, Isabelle D. Wedemeyer of New York City, NY, Margaret W. Strickland and William J. Glass both of Fayetteville. Three grandchildren, Gary Strickland and wife Sandy, Kenny Strickland and wife Robbie and Carra Holley of Tennessee; and nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by her nephews, Art Powell of Wilmington,Clifford Powell of Davidson, and a niece Marion Blue Powell Burch of Wilmington. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 am Tuesday June 14 , 2011 at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford, 131 Harris Avenue, Raeford. A graveside service will be 11:00 am Tuesday, June 14 , 2011 at Raeford Cemetery with Reverend Dr. Ewart Wyle officiating.
