

Lacy Dickson McFadyen, Jr., retired Education Director of Harnett Correctional Facility in Lillington died early Thursday morning from lung cancer at the Carrol S. Roberson Hospice Center in Fayetteville. He was 72 years old. Mr. McFadyen was the son of Lacy Dickson McFadyen, Sr. and Donnie Gainey McFadyen of Raeford. He was born on May 11, 1938 in Raeford. A native of Hoke County, Mr. McFadyen graduated from Hoke County High School in 1956. Immediately after high school, he worked with the FBI in Washington, DC for a year. After enlisting in the army, he attended the Army Language School in Monterey, CA. McFadyen felt that mastering Mandarin Chinese was one of his greatest academic achievements. During his remaining tenure in the army, he was assigned to the Army Security Agency. After military service, from 1962-1965, Mr. McFadyen earned a degree in Political Science from Pembroke State College (UNC-P). It was during this time that he met and later married the mother of his three children, Irma Crowley (Laird), of Raeford. McFadyen continued his education by earning a full scholarship to the University of Arkansas where he was awarded a Masters Degree in Creative Writing. While attending the university, he worked as a disc-jockey, using the name of Dick Lacy, at radio station KFAY. From 1967-1970, Mr. McFadyen worked at Fredrick College in Portsmouth, VA. as an English instructor. His next position began in 1971 and was with the North Carolina Department of Correction as the Education Director of Harnett Correctional Facility. He remained in this position until his retirement in 1998. In June of 1998, McFadyen married Janice Garvey. They enjoyed the mutual interests of traveling, camping, music, cruising, nature, UNC-Chapel Hill, motorcycling, along with the love for the state of Vermont. Survivors include a wife, Janice McFadyen of Fayetteville; a son, Lacy Dickson McFadyen, III of Raeford; two daughters, Megan McFadyen of Charlotte, and Laura Mac McFadyen of Raeford; a brother, Laughlin McFadyen of Raeford; a step-son, Tom South of Anchorage; and two grandchildren, Jonathan McFadyen, and Lauren McFadyen, and their mother, Jennifer, all of Raeford; numerous cousins, and finally, his beloved dog, Lacy Lu. A memorial service for Mr. McFadyen will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church on Tuesday, 15 March at 4:00 P.M. The church is located at 1601 Raeford Rd. in Fayetteville.
