

DATELINE: Southern Pines Mary Virginia McLean McFadyen, 101, affectionately known as 'Mamie' by family and friends, died Tuesday, July 20, 2010, in Southern Pines, NC. Mamie was born on October 16, 1908, in Maxton, NC, the daughter of Malcolm Purcell McLean and Almena McLeod Currie. She graduated from the Woman's College of UNCG in 1929 with a degree in Romance Languages. She began a lifelong career of teaching elementary school in Dallas, NC, where she taught UNC President Emeritus William Friday in her first 5th grade class, beginning a lifelong friendship. Mary Virginia married Neill Lauchlin McFadyen of Raeford, NC, on June 12, 1937, where they made their home. She moved to Belle Meade Retirement Community where she enjoyed living for the past ten years. Mamie was a faithful member of the Raeford Presbyterian Church, an avid bridge player, a devoted wife, and a good mother and friend. She was involved in the Raeford Women's Club, the Sir Walter Cabinet, the Belle Meade Mavens, and the Historic Mill Prong House. She served as a trustee for NC State University for ten years and participated in many academic, civic, and social boards and committees. The family will receive friends between the hours of 10:00 and 10:45 am, Friday, July 23, 2010 in the John C. Ropp Fellowship Hall. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 23 at the Raeford Presbyterian Church with Reverend Jerry Burnside officiating. Interment will immediately follow at the Raeford Cemetery. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Neill, who served in the NC Legislature for 12 years; her daughter, Virginia Purcell McFadyen Singleton; two sons, Neill Lauchlin McFadyen, Jr. and William McLean McFadyen; sister Margaret McLean Newberry; and brothers John Luther, Malcom, James, Lacy and William McLean. She is survived by son John Currie McFadyen and wife Elizabeth of Raleigh; sister Clara McLean of Pinehurst, and sister-in-law Isabelle McLean of Lumberton; daughter-in-law Stephanie McFadyen of Southern Pines; grandchildren William Singleton, Neill Singleton, LTC Thomas McFadyen, LTC James McFadyen, Clara Sullivan, and Anna McFadyen; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will also be held 3:00 p. m., Sunday, July 25, 2010 at the Belle Meade Retirement Community. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bill McFadyen Scholarship Fund in care of the Raeford Presbyterian Church, 128 W Edinborough Ave, Raeford, NC 28376.
