

Mr. Wendell Young was born in Forest City, NC to parents Chester Cau Young and Carmie Leoria Wilkerson Young on January 6, 1923. Wendell died at his home on January 25, 2022. He is survived by his sons, Wendell (Sam) Young Jr. and wife Jenell, and son, Timothy Alan Young. He is also survived by granddaughter, Rachel H. Young and husband, Justin McGehee. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Sally Grey Herring, grandson, Alan Powers Young, and daughter in law, Janice Powers Young.
Wendell served in World War II from 1943-45 under General George Patton in the 2nd Calvary as one of the Ghosts of Patton's Army. Wendell was awarded two silver stars and a Russian Medal of Honor for his service and bravery behind enemy lines. He liked to regale his family and friends with stories of playing softball with Generals Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, and English field marshal Montgomery.
Graduating from NC State University in 1950 with a degree in Animal Science, Wendell married his wife, Sally, the same year. He worked with the NC Cooperative Extension Service for 31 years. He began another career as a crop insurance adjustor for the US Department of Agriculture and private insurance companies working until his mid-90's.
Wendell served in many leadership roles in his Raeford community. He served as a member at Raeford United Methodist Church, the Kiwanis Club, and as the Chairman of the Board for the Children's Developmental Center in Raeford.
In recognition of Wendell's service to his country, a letter was read before Congress by his representative to the US House. He also was a recipient of the North Carolina Order of the Long leaf Pine in recognition of his extraordinary service to his state.
The family would like to thank First Health Hospice, Carolina Hearts Home Care, Comfort Keepers, caregiver and friend Jackie Hargrove, as well as the Raeford community for their loving care and support which allowed Wendell to remain in his home all these years.
A memorial service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Wendell's memory may be made to the Children's Developmental Center of Raeford.
