Albert Hanes Calloway passed away peacefully on January 30th in Raleigh, NC. He was surrounded by love and support from his family during his final days. His wife and all three of his children were with him as he took his final breaths. Albert was born in Concord, NC on April 13,1928 to Walter Earl and Atha Howell Calloway. He was the 6th of 7 children.
Albert started working at the family grocery store at the age of 9, sweeping floors and often credited his Dad for teaching him lifelong lessons. He graduated from Concord High School in 1945. At 17 he left for Chapel Hill and his life-long love for Carolina began. He graduated with a BS in Commerce in 1949 and worked for a short time in insurance sales before being drafted into the Army. Following his service as a corporal in Indiana and Germany, he returned to Concord and purchased his father’s grocery store and opened two more. In 1962, he sold the stores, moved to Raleigh and began a 30-year career in Economic Development for the State of NC, with a special love for small business development. Among other honors, Albert was awarded The Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 1972.
While still working with the grocery stores, friends set Albert up on a blind date with a young home economics teacher from Thomasville, NC. The story goes that he liked her immediately and thought she would be perfect for his best friend, Glenn. It was six months later before she ever met Glenn. Albert and Lorine married on August 10, 1958, and were together 67 years. They had a wonderful life in Raleigh where they raised their three children. In 2010, they moved to Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community, also in Raleigh.
Albert lived a full life and will be forever loved, honored, and missed deeply by his family and friends. He was most passionate about loving his family, continuing to learn, meeting new people and visiting Emerald Isle, their home away from home. Albert and Lorine made a great team. While the children were young, Lorine would coach them in sports, while Albert would take them to the local museums and the libraries. Just last month, he renewed subscriptions to National Geographic for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He could never get enough to read, with an intense love of anything WWII and a soft spot for David Baldacci novels. He and Lorine also loved traveling and would spend each New Year’s Eve planning the next year’s international adventure with their travel buddies. But their best trips were always to Emerald Isle where they’ve had a cottage for more than 53 years. Albert loved sunsets from the porch and “shrimperoos” on Saturday night with the family.
Always ready to help, Albert served on countless boards including the N.C. Coastal Resources Management Board, as President of the Brentwood Exchange Club, their children’s PTAs (sometimes as President), and in multiple leadership roles over 60 years with First Baptist Church. He served on the Board of Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community for 35 years and directed the Endowment Fund there. He and Lorine moved to Springmoor in 2010 and quickly became involved in every facet of their wonderful new home. We cannot thank the Springmoor community enough for their constant love and support.
Albert is survived by the love of his life, Lorine Kanoy Calloway, three children, four grandchildren, five beloved great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. The three children are Karen Marie Calloway (Marisel) of San Anselmo, CA, Emily Calloway Geerdes (Bradley) of Durham, NC, and Albert “Hanes” Calloway Jr. (Jill) of Raleigh, NC. His cherished grandchildren are Charlotte Stewart Metcalf (Ryan) and daughters Calloway, McKenzie, and Macie of Clermont, FL, Anna Stewart Buckley (David) of Charlotte, NC and daughter Lucy and son Henry, Nathan Hanes Calloway (Jen) of Charlotte, NC, Kathryn Jane Calloway of Stuart, FL, and step-granddaughter Whitney Hewitt of Cary, NC. Albert is preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at the Springmoor Auditorium in Raleigh with a reception to follow.
