There are so many words that could be used to describe Alfreda. She was full of life and brought joy to those she knew and loved, beginning with her birth in Tuskegee, AL on June 6th, 1960, to the late Dorothy and Phillip Thomas. She moved to St. Petersburg, FL in 1980 and worked as a phlebotomist and lab technician; working her way up to obtaining her Associate degree from St. Petersburg College and worked as a Substance Abuse Counselor for Operation Par. She also worked for Lee Memorial Hospital and then Naples Community Hospital part-time in Ft. Myers, FL until 2013 when she returned to Clearwater, FL. She worked for the state of Florida until her retirement in 2023. She made Raleigh, NC her temporary home until her passing.
Well known for her quick wit and vivacious personality, Alfreda seemed to never meet a stranger. Those that spent time with her quickly found that she was a warm, caring soul and she served as a shoulder to cry on for many. She loved to travel and was known to take an occasional trip to the outlets for a bit of retail therapy…on a budget, of course. She was also known for being a workaholic, usually working two (and sometimes three) jobs - she just liked staying busy and sharing her wealth of experience and expertise. Alfreda was a shining light who left so many lives better than she found them and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her so.
She is also preceded in death by her brothers Frederick James, James Edward, and Phillip James, Jr as well as her beloved Cockatiel, Charley. She is survived by her only daughter, Cynthia (Jason) of Raleigh, NC; sisters Christine (Willie) of Greenville, GA; Jessie (Dennis) of Tuskegee, AL, and Linda of Montgomery, AL; brothers Robert of Tuskegee, AL, Jeffery of Tuskegee, AL, Roger (Gayle) of Tuskegee, AL, and Larry (Crystal) of Opelika, AL; many nieces and nephews, a host of friends, and several pseudo children that she “adopted” along the way.
Per our loved one’s wishes, there will not be any services.
