Born on June 18, 1938, in Danzig (now Gdańsk, Poland), Barbara was a refugee in West Germany after World War II. She met her husband Peter, who was serving in the U.S. Army, in Bamberg, Germany. After marrying in 1959, she immigrated to the United States in 1961. She was an army wife and mother during the Vietnam War and beyond, living all over the United States and Germany until retiring, first to Georgia, then to North Carolina, to be near grandchildren.
Her great passions were travel, reading, needlework and knitting, classical music, theater, and hiking. She enjoyed experiencing the cultures of the world, particularly Asia, and natural beauty of national parks with her husband of 58 years Peter (who predeceased her in 2017), and when at home she enjoyed indulging her much-loved grandchildren and grand dogs.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses – Gigi (Laizik) and Kurt Ehlers, Suzanne Laizik and Ron Kassimir, and Christopher Laizik; and three grandchildren – Katja Ehlers, Kyle Ehlers, and Ruby Kassimir.
