

Hazel graduated from Clemson University and served in the US Army. Throughout his military career, he served with the 12th Armored Division in Europe during World War II, the Engineer Combat Unit in Korea during the Korean War, the 82nd Airborne and while in Germany, the 95th Engineers. His decorations and awards included the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.
Upon retiring from the Army, Colonel Byrd accepted the position of Industrial Hygiene Engineer with the State of North Carolina. He retired in 1976.
Surviving him are his two children, Larry Byrd, of Sarasota, FL and Barbara Byrd Mansfield, of Elizabeth City; three grandchildren, Shawn Biggs and Buddy Mansfield, both of Hertford, NC and Derek Byrd, of Sarasota, FL; and nine great-grandchildren.
Colonel Byrd was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Slattery Byrd in 1997.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 10:30 AM in the 2nd Floor Dining Hall at Stewart Health Care at Springmoor Retirement Community. Graveside Services will follow at 12 Noon at Raleigh Memorial Park, with Military Honors.
