

He was born on November 22, 1941, in Henderson, NC to the late, Lew Wallace and Agnes Bowers. He grew up in Norlina, NC and attended East Carolina University for his undergraduate degree in Education, and Duke University for his Master’s Degree in Public Administration.
In 1963, Dan began public education career at Sherwood Bates as a beloved teacher, where he rose quickly in his role was asked to be principal. Dan was a principal for the Raleigh Public Schools and Wake County School System for over 30 years at seven schools. Dan was named Principal of the Year in Wake County several times during his career. He helped transition Washington Elementary into Raleigh’s emerging Magnet Program and believed in the benefits of the Magnet Schools’ impact on communities. Dan retired as Principal at West Millbrook Middle School in 1994.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Ann Holroyd Bowers; son, Carlton Bowers; stepson, Scott Youngblood and wife Tomara; his sister, Martha Overby and her husband, Jim; and numerous, nieces and nephews. He was "Pop" to his beloved granddaughters, Hermione, Cameron, and Margot Youngblood.
He was preceded in death by brother, Wallace Bowers; and stepson, Drew Youngblood.
The memorial funeral service for Dan will be held at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church on Wednesday, February 28th at 1:00 pm. A reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall.
