He was born in the Bronx, NY on April 11, 1955 to Esther and Chester Rainer.
David received a BS from Quinnipiac University and an MS from University of Minnesota before going to work at Bell Labs and Bellcore. David was employed by North Carolina State University for 30 years, most recently serving as Associate Vice Chancellor.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, skiing, bike riding, and golfing. He was honest, loyal, and a genuine friend.
David was preceded in death by Esther and Chester Rainer and stepfather Stanley Nayer.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Wendy Rainer, son Joshua Rainer (Teresa), daughter Rebecca Rainer Krug (Christopher), brother Jonathan Rainer (Renee), granddaughter Olivia Rainer, numerous nieces and nephews, and Marley the Ecuadorian street dog.

A memorial service for David will be held Friday, February 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home & Crematory, 300 Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC 27605.
