Doris Elizabeth King

She was predeceased by her parents and her brothers, Joseph Albert King and his wife, Janie, and Norwood Charles King and his wife, Bonnie.

She is survived by her niece, June King Jones and her husband, Richard, her great nephews, Matthew Jones and his wife, Paula and their children Ellie Doris, Leighton Rae and Jack, and Andrew Jones and his wife, Lauren of Georgia.

Dr. King graduated form Georgia State Woman's College at Valdosta as valedictorian with highest honors and began her teaching career at the age of 19. She then earned her Masters and PhD degrees in history with a concentration in public hospitality in the United States from Duke University. She was one of the first women to be granted a scholarship for PhD studies at Duke by the History Department. She taught at Campbell College (now University), Stephen F. Austin University, and Wesleyan College in Georgia. She was recruited by then North Carolina State University Chancellor John Caldwell to help establish a College of Liberal Arts degree program in history and government and to prepare students to teach those subjects. She taught at NCSU from 1966 until her retirement in 1991.

Dr. King was an active member of Phi Beta Kappa, Daughter of the American Revolution, Edenton Street United Methodist Church and the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century which she served as state president and the oldest honorary state president.

At Dr. King's request there will be no services in Raleigh.

She will be buried in Cairo, GA with her parents in the family's gravesite.
