Dorothy, known as “Dot" by her family and friends, was born October 31, 1929, in Johnston County, North Carolina to the late Julian and Beatrice Ellis Hughes. She lived in the Raleigh area most of her life. Dot worked as a secretary for a local eye doctor for a number of years. She was an active member of Westover United Methodist Church. Dot loved to work in her yard, play word games on her phone and enjoying time spent with her four sisters and two brothers. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dot was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Dot was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Mathew “Tommy” Avery, along with four sisters.
Surviving is her son, Ronnie Dailey (Lorna) of Cary; her daughter, Betty Dailey Murray (Jimmie) of Raleigh; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers: Julian Hughes (Pat) of Wilmington and Curt Hughes (Janet) of Clayton.
A graveside service for Dot was held 11:00 am Thursday, September 18, 2025, in Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27612.
