She was born July 16th, 1926 to Clyde Edgar Mizelle and Jessie Thurston Mizelle at her grandparent’s house in Clayton, NC. She was a graduate of the Wakelon School where she was taught by her mother in second grade, and Women’s College (UNC-Greensboro) where she majored in music, specifically piano.
She was married to Thomas B. Broughton in 1947 at the First Baptist Church of Raleigh where they both were active members for their lifetimes. Tom and Dot settled in their new home in Country Club Hills in 1951, with her father in law, Dr. Ernest Broughton wondering why they were moving so far out in the country. She was a member of the Country Clods Garden Club, Aldert Root PTA, North Ridge and Carolina Country Clubs along with numerous bridge and dinner clubs with many Raleigh friends.
She had two sons, Tom, Jr and Bill. She was involved with many school groups, sports teams, music lessons and bands from Aldert Root, Daniels Junior High and Broughton High School. Dot was a piano teacher and hosted many recitals at her home with her students.
She loved entertaining and hosted many events for church, bridge clubs, dinner clubs and other special events. She was an excellent cook and the whole family always looked forward to the traditional family holiday meals, that are all documented on file cards and are carried on to this day.
Dot was an active member of First Baptist Church where she served on numerous committees, was a faithful Sunday School teacher, a loyal choir member and played many piano solos for Sunday services.
She was very proud of her family history and her current family. In her later years and during the pandemic she resided at Whitaker Glen in Raleigh and Sunrise of Raleigh. She was always delighted with family visits and continued to look forward to family holiday celebrations. She was a Southern Lady and in her lifetime, she saw the Depression, WWII and a pandemic.
Dorothy (Dot) Broughton was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by her son, William Thurston Broughton and wife Robin of Raleigh, daughter in law Jane Johnson Broughton of Smithfield, and four special grandchildren, William Carter Broughton of Raleigh, Robert Thurston Broughton and wife Katharine of Chapel Hill, Michael Scott Broughton and wife Erica of Raleigh, Jessica Broughton Sermarini and husband Michael of Cape Carteret.
