

Born during the depression, Frances grew up in Dunn, N.C., the daughter of George Alton Jernigan and Willie Lee Barefoot. Frances graduated from Plainview High School, Class of 1951. Following graduation, she moved to Raleigh, N.C. to attend King’s Business College.
In 1966, she married George Cree Mitchell Jr., and they raised three sons together. Frances was quite the hostess. Her Christmas Eve and Christmas Day gatherings were legendary for family and friends, where her boiled custard was the most anticipated and yearly favorite. Frances also loved service to community, volunteering weekly her time at Saint Michael’s Church and Rex Hospital. Throughout her life she enjoyed travel, having seen almost every corner of the world, from Australia to the Soviet Union.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Archie Graham Jernigan.
She is survived by her sister, Brookie Jernigan Alexander. Surviving in addition to her are Frances’ sons, David Williams Parrish, Jr. of Raleigh N.C., George Cree Mitchell III of St. Augustine, Florida and James Henry Alexander Mitchell and his wife Jaime Ferebee Mitchell of Raleigh N.C.; seven grandchildren, David Williams Parrish III, Carter Rynne Parrish, Edward Alexander Wright, Madison Lauren Wright, Reagan Patricia Wright, Grayson Cree Mitchell, James Henry Alexander Mitchell II; and a great-grandson, Jameson Lamonte Simpson.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 23rd at 2:00 pm at Saint Michael's Episcopal Church. A reception will follow the service in the church Parish Hall. Burial will be private.
