Gerry was born December 6, 1924 in Raleigh, NC to James W. and Beatrice Hamilton. She graduated from Broughton High School and Peace College in Raleigh. Prior to retirement she worked at UNC-Charlotte in the Criminal Justice Department and later at NC State for the extension service.
Gerry was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC. She was a dedicated Christian who always enjoyed being with others. She was blessed with the ability to put others first and could be described as a true “Southern Lady.” She loved music and played the piano for church functions and sang in the choir for many years. Upon moving to Charlotte in 2001 she enjoyed the company of many friends. She often spoke fondly of her canasta group at church and the lunches they shared following their games would have made most envious. Her sons could always look forward to Mom’s playing the piano at Christmas and giving them “that look” to participate in singing carols. She never missed one of the son’s ball games as they grew up and would talk basketball with the best, but only if they took her side and pulled for NC State.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, William Russell Richardson in 2001. She is survived by her three sons and their families: William Russell Richardson Jr. and wife Mary; James Edwin Richardson and wife Dale; Michael Scott Richardson and wife Susan. Grandchildren, Blair Richardson and wife Jennifer; Tyler Richardson; Megan Richardson Banks and husband Drate. Great granddaughter, Lily Banks.
The Family would like to express appreciation to Plantation Estates retirement community and Hospice for their loving support through a difficult period.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 12:00 Noon, with visitation 1 hour prior to the service, in the Mausoleum Chapel at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh (directly beside Mitchell Funeral Home)
