Harry Jones Thomas Jr.

Harry Jones Thomas, Jr., 89, formerly of Durham, passed away on August 2, 2011. Born on December 8, 1921 in Greensboro, NC; he was the son of the late Harry Jones Thomas, Sr. and Iva Brooks. Harry enlisted into the U.S. Air Corp during WWII and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a Bachelors in Drama. He was called back to duty during the Korean Conflict and retired from the Air Force Reserves as Captain after 20 years of honorable service.

Harry married Claire Alexander Thomas and together they raised their family in Durham. He was employed with Bull Durham News & Tobacco. Claire passed away in April 1995 and Harry moved to Cary to be near is daughter in 2004.

He is survived by his children: Phillip C. Thomas and wife Carol, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Robert G. Thomas, of Marietta, GA; and Jill Thomas Cone and husband Rick, of Cary, NC; grandchildren: Sabrina Cone Sanders and husband Robbie, of Kings Mountain, NC, Robert Blake Cone and Garrett Thomas Cone, both of Raleigh, and Andrew Alexander Cone, of Cary; and by great-grandchildren: Colby Jordan Sanders and Madison Nicole Sanders.

He was preceded in death by a son, Leslie Ross Thomas and sister, Iva Lou Brooks.

Family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7-9 PM at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue). Graveside Funeral Rites, with Military Honors, will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 11 AM at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens.
