

Hazel Spell Jenks, 95, passed away peacefully at home on December 5, 2020. Born Lillian Hazel Spell on July 14, 1925, in Stedman, North Carolina, Hazel was the daughter of the late Oscar Glenn and Lillian Copeland Spell and the wife of the late Larry Jenks. Hazel was predeceased by her brothers, Homer Spell and O.G. Spell Jr., and her sister, Virginia S. Sprague.
Following a year at Peace College in Raleigh, Hazel was employed with Norfolk Southern Railroad and retired as an Administrative Supervisor. She was a true Tar Heel fan and enjoyed attending games as well as post game travels.
Hazel loved her family and friends, and she thrived on the social events they provided. She is survived by her nieces, Laura Spell Watkins and Vicky Spell McMillan, and nephews, Louis C. Spell, Oscar “Glenn”Spell, David M. Sprague, and James A. Sprague; her great-nephews Oscar Glenn Spell IV, Copeland Spell, Chris Sprague, Matt Sprague, and John W. Watkins; great-nieces, Lindsay Sprague and Rachel S. Bingham; great-great nephews, Brandon and Matthew Bingham all held a special place in her heart and she always enjoyed their visits.
The family would like to thank Patsy Lloyd for her excellent and loving care to Hazel these past few years and to her great niece, Rachel Spell Bingham, who provided encouragement regarding her health care.
A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, December 9 th at 2:30 pm at Montlawn Cemetery in Raleigh. It will be officiated by Rev. Dr. Alan Swartz, Pastor of Highland UMC, where Hazel was a long time member. The service will be recorded and posted on the Facebook page of Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park.
