Helen K. Candes, age 100, died on Monday April 10, 2018 at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC. A longtime resident of Raleigh, NC, she was born in Darby, Pennsylvania on December 14, 1917 to Steven and Mary Cederas. Her family later moved to West Virginia where she married and had her first son. She then moved to Morristown New Jersey, where she raised her sons Evangelos and Chris.
Helen worked for her son Chris for over 25 years at Two Guys Restaurant in Raleigh where she brightened the days of many patrons of the restaurant. She loved baking Greek pastries, knitting afghan quilts and caring for her grandchildren, great- grandchildren and animals.
She is survived by her sister, Katie Sedereas; brother, Mike Cederas; her sons, Chris Candes (Laura) and Evangelos Candes (Cheryl); as well as 5 grandchildren, John Candes (Karen), Elaina Candes (Scott), Chris Candes, Michael Candes (Leslie) and Anastasia Smith (Mike); and great-grandchildren, Haley Candes, Arya Candes, Evangelos Candes, Alexander Candes, Lena Candes, Evan Candes, Fallon Smith and Kora Smith.
Helen is predeceased by her husband, John Candes her mother & father Mary and Steven Cederas and sisters, Diane Zervakos and Sophie Borzeka.
A celebration of Helen’s amazing life will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Sunday, April 22 at 5:00 pm, located at 300 St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh with Father Paul Christy officiating. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm at Brown-Wynne.
