Herbert Galen Meekins, 89, of Raleigh, died at home on July 26, 2013. Herb was preceded in death by his parents Geneva R. and Herbert Meekins, sister Geneva Cayton and son, Herbert (Herbie) G. Meekins, Jr.
Herb served in the US Navy in the 129 PVB Battalion as a top turret gunner with honors and the 119 Battalion as a B-24 nose turret gunner during WWII. He worked in dry cleaning and insurance sales for over 40 years.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jean Garner Meekins; brother Ellis Meekins of Winston-Salem, NC; daughters Sandra Foor and husband Jim of Houston, TX and Galen Jones and husband Clark of Raleigh, NC; son Robert G. Meekins and wife Cathy of Minneapolis, MN; seven grandchildren including: Melanie French Rothwell of Houston, TX; Alexander Jones of Raleigh, NC; Tal, Olivia and Phillip DeBauche of Houston, TX; Robin and Randy Meekins of Minneapolis, MN, and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Monday, July 29, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC. Burial will follow immediately at Raleigh Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at Mitchell Funeral Home.
