John Francis Hogan died Friday, May 23, 2014. Born on December 10, 1923, in Baltimore, Maryland, Jack was the son of Joseph Aloysius Hogan and Mary Sullivan Hogan. He served in the United State Coast Guard during World War II. After his service he attended William and Mary College, where he was a member of their National Championship Tennis Team. After college, he became a tennis professional at the Norfolk Yacht and Racquet Club.
Jack moved to Raleigh in 1954 to work for the North Carolina Catholic newspaper. There he met his wife Margaret Anne Murchison (“Peggy Anne”) and they married in 1956. In 1959, he co-founded Custom Displays Inc., an outdoor advertising company known today as Hogan Outdoor, Inc. He was a past president of the North Carolina Outdoor Advertising Association.
Nothing made Jack happier than playing sports, especially tennis, racquetball and golf. He shared his love of tennis with his five children who all played competitively. Many summers, Jack would travel with his children to tournaments around the country to watch them compete. He spent many hours at the Raleigh YMCA on the racquetball courts and was ranked as high as 5th nationally in the seniors division.
Jack was a faithful Christian throughout his life. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and Sunday school teacher. He was also a long time volunteer at Rex Hospital. Jack and Peggy Anne enjoyed their friends and were members of the Carolina Country Club, the Nine O’clock Cotillion Club, the St. Christopher’s Club, the Capital Cotillion Club and the Sphinx Club.
Jack was a self-made man with an entrepreneurial spirit. He was a true salesman who worked his entire life to make a better life for his family. He was a gentleman who treated everyone with kindness and respect. He conducted himself with grace and humility. He was a people person, an optimist, and had a great sense of humor. He was quick to laugh, quite often at himself, and he never let the truth get in the way of a good story. The time we spent together as a family has always been filled with laughter.
His wife, Peggy Anne, and his three brothers, Joe, Bobby and Billy, precede him in death. He is survived by his five children, Katharine Hogan Kane and her husband Kevin; John Francis Hogan Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth; Margaret Hogan McBryde and her husband Angus; Joseph Sullivan Hogan and his wife Blair; Louise Hogan Walker and her husband Chris; and his eleven grandchildren, Katie and Maggie Kane; John and Hardy Hogan; Grace and Jane McBryde; Isabelle and Hogan Walker; and Jack, Liv and Lucy Hogan.
The family would like to thank the caregivers of the Stewart Health Center at Springmoor for their kindness and dedicated service to our dad, especially George and Theodore. We are also grateful for the assistance we received from the many caregivers at Home Instead, in particular the kindness and compassion he received from Dalia and Amy.
A graveside service/Liturgy of Committal will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh. Following the graveside service, the family will receive friends from 4-6:00 p.m. at the Carolina Country Club, 2500 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh.
