Obituary of Joseph "Joe" Alton Massey
Joseph (Joe) Alton Massey, 75, walked into Glory to meet his Lord & Savior on Friday, September 23, 2022. He was surrounded by the loves of his life Betsy, Jennifer & Jessica holding his hands. He is preceded in death by his sons, Joseph Jr. (Jay) and Joshua, his parents, David & Laura Massey, his brother, Charles Massey, and his beloved sister, Peggy Moore. He was an adoring husband to his wife of 53 years, Betsy. He was also a devoted father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, friend, and Christian. He retired from IBM and Cenplex Building Services. He loved to sing and sang in church, at funerals and weddings, including both of his daughters. He was active at his church, Wesley UMC; serving in many leadership roles and spearheading BBQs, pancake suppers, and spaghetti dinners with joy & laughter. He loved serving Jesus through Kairos Prison Ministries and loved his brothers in Christ who served with him. His love of holidays was well known to all. His cooking skills were legendary among his friends & family especially when he “doctored them up”. His greatest joy was being with his family. Nothing made him happier than when his children, sons-in-law, grandchildren, and their partners would spend time with him. He is survived by his wife, Betsy; his daughters, Jennifer Barshay (Demian) and Jessica Young (David); his siblings, Johnny Massey (Carleen), Lacy Massey (Shirley), Tracy Massey (Rose), Nancy Stuart (Allen); and eight grandchildren, Zachary Dale (Drew Pearson), Xander MacKethan, Brody Young, Bailey Young, Brandon Young, Vivian Young and Maija & Evan Barshay; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly. Services will be held at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 714 East Whitaker Mill Rd., Raleigh, NC 27608 on Saturday, October 1st at 3:00 pm. A reception will follow the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Wesley Memorial. Service arrangements provided by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh, NC.
