Glenn was born on August 27, 1952 to Lellon and the late John (JD) Stanley, Jr. of Raleigh. A happy and fun loving person, Glenn enjoyed life with his parents and sister, Kim, growing up in Raleigh.
While attending N.C. State University in 1974, Glenn met Debra Renfrow at Darryl’s Restaurant on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh. The line to get in that rainy night made for a good excuse to sit together. They were subsequently married in June 1981 and continued to make their home in Raleigh. That home is still the main residence and was designed and contracted by Glenn himself. A diehard NC State Wolfpack fan, he kept up with their sports and was thrilled about the recent final four success of the basketball team. Before retiring, Glenn’s occupation included positions in Inventory Control and Sales. He was employed more than 28 years at Standard Commercial, which took him to South America every year.
Glenn always lifted those around him with his wit and jokes. Laughing, telling something silly and giggling, he was fun to be around. A master on a Weber Grill, he was a grilling gourmet and could impress the best of cooks. From plumbing, electrical work, building, landscaping, you name it, Glenn could do it all and do it right. He was a masterful pro.
On June 27, 1988, Glenn and Debra’s family became complete when their baby girl Angie Lauren Stanley was born. She meant the world to both Glenn and Debra. He was a loving, engaged and devoted father. Sadly, Angie was killed in an auto accident less than two years ago, which caused insurmountable pain for both Glenn and Debra. Although suffering from the loss of his only child, Glenn provided needed support to Angie’s friends and sheltered and nurtured Debra back to a more productive life.
Never angry or belittling, always faithful and fun, Glenn was a good man. Above all, he loved his family. Words cannot express this tragic loss.
He is survived by his loving wife, Debra, mother Lellon, and one sister, Kim Layman.
In addition to his father, Glenn was preceded in death by his daughter, Angie.
A Celebration of Glenn’s life will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2024 at 2:00pm at Temple Baptist Church, with Dr. Mike Parnell officiating. To honor Glenn, please dress in casual attire and NC State colors.
