Lawrence Peterson of Raleigh, NC passed away on April 1, 2026, at the age of 78. Born in Traverse City, Michigan on September 20, 1947, Lawrence (Larry) was the son of Victor and Mildred Peterson. In 1969 he married Karen Plews, and together they enjoyed 56 years of loving marriage.
Larry is survived by his two children: Erik (Delia) Peterson and Sarah (Steve Hess) Peterson; brothers, Jan (Janet, deceased) Peterson and Bruce (Jackie) Peterson; two grandchildren: Laila and Riyen; and ten nieces and nephews.
Larry served in the United States Army and then spent 37 years serving veterans as a social worker with the Department of the Army and the Veterans Health Administration. For 17 years, he was the Chief of Social Work at the Durham VA Medical Center. After his retirement, he continued to be active with the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), including being elected to the Board of Directors. Larry was a proud alumni of Michigan State University and received his MSSW at the University of Louisville and his MPH at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Larry enjoyed traveling and having new adventures with his wife, family, and friends. He appreciated a good walk, took pleasure in a friendly golf game, and loved continually learning. He was an avid sports fan who played fantasy football with his family and regularly attended UNC football games with his wife and their friends. He treasured his time with his children and grandchildren, helping them carve pumpkins and making them his famous “grandpaffles”. He was a loving and much beloved husband, son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He will be dearly missed.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 PM on April 18, 2026 at Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7209 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC 27612.
