Lawrence Billy Powell

At age 18, he married Doris Cochran Powell, and during their 54 year marriage had three children, four grandchildren and innumerable friends. Bill served his country as a soldier in the U.S. Army and later the citizens of North Carolina as the Director of Prison Enterprises. After a rewarding career, he retired early from public service to help care for his grandchildren, and "Papa," as his grandchildren called him, filled their lives with fun and memories of fishing, camping and trips to the park. After Doris' passing, Bill married longtime family friend Bessie Tunstall Powell in 2006, and the two made a home together in Knightdale, NC. Even in his declining health, Bill continued to exemplify God's love and a heart for serving others.

Bill passed away in his home at the age of 82 in the company of friends and family. He is survived by his wife Bessie Powell; son Lawrence Powell and wife Roberta; daughters Linda Fitts and Carolyn Powell; and grandsons Nathan Powell, David Powell and wife Brandalyn, Andrew Fitts and Brooks Fitts.
