Lee was born to Lee Roy and Mary Elizabeth (Glass) McDonald in Carthage, NC and graduated from Carthage High School. After joining the Air Force during the Korean War, he attended Brooklyn College in New York and received his undergraduate degree at East Carolina University. He earned an advanced degree from NC State University, where he also served on the administrative faculty from 1961 to 1993, finishing as the Director of the Student Center.
Lee was an avid and unwavering fan of the NC State Football and Basketball teams. He was known for his witty sense of humor and his excellent vodka tonics, always with two limes.
He is survived by his daughters, Puckette Ann McDonald and Elizabeth Grey McDonald, his sister, Elizabeth Ann Camp, and his ex-wife and friend, Lany Walden McDonald. He is preceded in death by his parents, his nephew Michael Lee Camp, and his beloved cat, Lucy.
A tree dedication service will be held at a to-be-determined date in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the SPCA of Wake County.
