

Lynn was born on August 27, 1938 in Raleigh, the daughter of Sarah Farmer Wall and John Edgar Wall, Jr., and was raised there and in Greensboro, NC, where she graduated from Greensboro High School in 1956. Lynn attended Sullins College in Bristol, VA for two years and then moved on to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she graduated with a Bachelors in Science degree in 1960. She subsequently pursued graduate studies in zoology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
While a graduate student, Lynn met Dawson Emerson Scarborough, Jr., a fourth-year medical student at UNC. Lynn and Emerson married at the First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro on August 31, 1963, after Emerson had completed a rotating internship at the Medical College of Virginia, then moved to Kinston, NC where Emerson worked on the medical staff at Caswell Center from 1963 to 1966. They returned to Chapel Hill for the duration of Emerson’s residency in pathology, then moved to Greensboro for an additional six months of Emerson’s training at Cone Memorial Hospital.
During their time in Chapel Hill had, they welcomed two daughters into their family, Sarah Stewart and Mary Ashley. After the completion of Emerson’s residency, in early 1971, the family moved to Rocky Mount, NC, where Emerson set up a Pathology practice. There they had a son, John Emerson. After seven years, the family then moved to Raleigh, NC where Emerson joined a group practice with six other pathologists.
Lynn was active with the Junior Leagues in both Chapel Hill and Rocky Mount, serving as the Editor of the latter’s cookbook and an active participant in developing a Junior League cookbook in Chapel Hill. She also served as a North Carolina Medical Society Auxiliary leader in Rocky Mount. Lynn also enjoyed playing tennis and was very proud of trophies she won in Rocky Mount. She was active throughout her life in numerous bridge, garden, bible study, and book clubs, including bridge club, the Seed and Sod Garden Club and Queen’s Court Book Club and a Bible Study group in Raleigh. Lynn was known by all for her keen sense of humor, intelligence, kindness, and empathy.
Lynn was preceded in death by her daughters, Sarah Stewart Scarborough and Mary Ashley Scarborough. She is survived by her husband, Dawson Emerson Scarborough, Jr, her son John Emerson Scarborough, her grandsons Alex Emerson Scarborough and Eli Bennett Scarborough, her sister, Janie Leigh Wall Carter, her nieces Leigh Carter Egeghy, Sarah Carter Stevens and, and her nephew Iverson Brooks Carter, and their children.
Before her church service, family and close friends will attend Lynn’s burial service at on Friday, August 23 at 10 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery at 701 Oakwood Avenue in Raleigh. The church service will begin at 11 AM at Christ Episcopal Church at 120 East Edenton Street in Raleigh; a reception at the church will follow.
