Margaret (Margot) Russel Norton born November 6, 1946, died peacefully in her sleep with her husband Mark at her side, on October 11, 2020 at Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. She is survived by her husband of thirty-two years, Mark Herdter of New York, NY and Raleigh, NC and is also survived by her cousin, Philip Norton, of Beverly, MA, and his daughter, Elizabeth Norton Scholder of Boston, MA. Her parents Phillips Norton and Gertrude Spohn Norton, both of Goshen, IN. preceded her in death.
Born and raised in New York, Margot resided in Manhattan all her life with a home in Raleigh NC. She graduated from the twelve-year Spence School in Manhattan, Class of 1964, where she recently attended both her 55th and 56th reunions. She earned a B.A. in Art History from Hunter College, did graduate work at the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU, and completed the Whitney Museum Program in Curatorial Studies in the 1980's. While an undergraduate at Sarah Lawrence, Margot starred in the Brian DePalma film Murder á la Mod, released in 1968 (as Margo Norton), and performed in numerous plays and musicals.
Her career path was both in publishing at Viking and in the art world as the long time director at Ward-Nasse Gallery in SoHo where she currated exhibitions, literary and political events. She is also retired from the Design Department at Oppenheimer Funds in New York.
Although she suffered renal failure, she received a living kidney from her husband in 2006. It always remained a sense of wonderment to her. She and her husband visited Europe, and Italy in particular, many times where she could enjoy and use her knowledge of classical and Renaissance art. They also enjoyed and took many automobile road trips around America.
Burial is at Oakwood Cemetery with a graveside service at 12 Noon on Thursday May 13, 2021. A memorial in her honor is planned sometime later in New York.
