Marilyn Zahner Blackmer, 83, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025. Born August 22, 1942, in Missouri, to Cora Mae and Henry Zahner, Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Susan Blackmer Stallard and many other family members and friends who will cherish her memory. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years James (Jim).
Living most of her life in Tampa, Florida, Marilyn attended Chamberlain High School and was a member of the inaugural graduating class of the University of South Florida, earning her bachelor’s degree in education in 1963. She later completed her Doctor of Education at Nova Southeastern University. Having boundless love for her profession, she served as a teacher, assistant principal, and district level administrator for Hillsborough County elementary schools over the course of her career. After “retiring” Marilyn served as a professor in Hillsborough Community College’s educator preparation program where she helped college graduates earn their Professional Teaching Certificate.
Marilyn enjoyed playing the piano, cooking, and hosting an annual Christmas party for family and friends. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her beloved husband Jim.
To honor her contribution to public education, Marilyn’s Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 31 at 10:30 at Dr. Phillips Elementary School (media room), 6909 Dr. Phillips Blvd, Orlando, Florida, 32819. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation to the Hillsborough Education Foundation in her honor.
