Peggy Jones Stevens (aka Bear, Grandbear, Whoa-Whoa) 89, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2022. Peggy was born in Raleigh, North Carolina on July 1, 1933 to William (Bill) Jones and Vera Parrish Jones. She was a fun and witty woman who loved her God, her family, friends, and her church. Peggy was a devoted member of Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church for 63 years where she taught Sunday School, volunteered as a wedding planner, and assisted in many other ministries. While her physical presence will be missed, her fun-loving spirit will continue in our hearts forever. Our comfort comes from knowing that she is no longer in pain and she is finally home.
Peggy was preceded in death by her father Bill Jones, her mother Vera Jones Lee, her stepfather Jimmy Lee, her stepmother Lucy Jones and by her son-in-laws David Walters and Roy Hollyfield. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Thel Stevens; five children: Mark Andrews, Lynne Hollyfield, Kathy Stevens, Janice Walters and Amy Ashby (Charlie). Peggy was a devoted grandmother to nine grandchildren: Miranda Arnold (TJ), Brandon Patton, Justin Peck, Steven Walters (Sarah), Jessica Carson (Landon), Krista Dennis, Alec Ashby, Max Ashby, and Cooper Ashby; as well as four great-grandchildren: Trey, Jacob, Sophie, and Liam. She is also survived by numerous loving cousins and extended family.
Her greatest joy in life was when her family was together. Grandbear always had Fruit-By-The-Foot and Capri Suns on hand and in stock for any child needing extra sugar. Her children fondly remember their mother always cracking jokes and making everyone laugh. Peggy was also the neighborhood mom who was so loved by all the west Raleigh kids who spent their childhood in the Stevens' home.
Peggy worked for Durham Life Insurance Company for 33 years while juggling the demands of a large family. She was an avid NC State fan who was even a cheerleader for State College (NC State) while attending Hardbarger College. Peggy was always up for a good time! If you asked her to do something, her response was always, “I ain’t busy.” Thel and Peggy’s Superbowl parties were ones not to be missed.
The family would like to give thanks to Peggy’s Stephen Minister, Jean Chard, her entire church family and many close friends.
Services will be held at 11:00am on Monday September 12, 2022 at Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church (4900 Kaplan Drive in Raleigh), followed by a luncheon afterwards. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church.
