Phyllis Aker Goodwin

Phyllis Aker Goodwin, 78, passed Wednesday, December 28, 2022, with her family by her side. Phyllis was born June 16, 1944 in Pulaski, Virginia and raised in Roanoke, Virginia. Phyllis was preceded in death by her birth mother, Mozelle Hoback Aker and loving parents, Kenneth “Stuart” and Eleanor Aker, as well as many four-legged babies.

Following her father to Raleigh, Phyllis met her devoted husband of 52 years, Joseph Eugene Goodwin, who later retired as Senior Chief from the United States Navy before becoming an educator for several years. Over the course of 27 years, Phyllis served the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the North Carolina Supreme Court. Phyllis and Joseph considered their greatest accomplishment to be their two daughters who currently serve the educational community at public schools and NC State (Go Pack!)

Phyllis is survived by her loyal husband Joseph; their daughter, Paige Goodwin Elliott; daughter, Kim Goodwin Roberts and her husband, Brad; granddaughters, Austen Roberts and Lera Faye Roberts; brother, Melvin Weidner and his wife, Carol and son, Avery; and brother, Kevin Weidner and his wife Jessica and their children, Casey and Jonathan Weidner. Additional loving survivors are Phyllis’ best friend of 50 years, Faye Davis of Virginia Beach and lapdog companion “Chica.”

Phyllis and her family attended and served at Crabtree Valley Baptist Church and Wentworth Christian Church throughout the years.

An intimate memorial service will be held for close family and friends at a future date.
