Survived by her husband, Brion Leary; four children, Sage Okamato, of Kennebunk, Maine, Hailey Shafir (Maximilian), of Raleigh, Deirdre Leary, of Raleigh, Jacob Leary, of Raleigh; two grandchildren: Givon and Omari Harris; three siblings: James Carlson, of Wake Forest, Amanda Carlson, of Raleigh, and Sarah Fitzpatrick, of Boston, MA; other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother.
Penny received the Volunteer of the Year 2006 from the National Psoriasis Foundation, the President's Volunteer Service Award Bronze in 2008 and 2009, the Governor Easley Award for Volunteer Services to North Carolina in 2008.
Memorial Service Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 10 am at the Mausoleum Chapel of Raleigh Memorial Park (7501 Glenwood Avenue). In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory are preferred to the National Psoriasis Foundation at www.psoriasis.org or to the North Carolina Food Bank.
