Richard Johnson, lovingly known as “Dickie,” passed away on his 71st birthday after a courageous battle with multiple cancers. He defied the odds for over eight years, truly a walking miracle. Born on July 6, 1954, Dickie was the second of four sons of Andrew Monroe and Joan Griffin Johnson. He deeply loved his family, especially his boys.
Dickie graduated from Enloe High School and attended NC State, remaining a devoted Wolfpack fan throughout his life. A hard worker, Dickie was mostly self-employed throughout his career. He began in business with his father at A.M. Johnson & Company as a manufacturer’s representative for lighting. His love for the restaurant industry, first sparked during his time at Swain’s Steakhouse, eventually led him to purchase the “Wooden Nickel” in Raleigh. In his “semi-retirement,” he worked as a courier—a role he loved, especially the drives along the East Coast. His final employment was with Budget Courier in Garner, where his colleagues became like family.
He is survived by his wife, Ronda; his son, Trent (Katie); his mother, Joan; two treasured granddaughters, Andie and Lily; his brothers, Mike (Martha) and Andy; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his cherished pets, Poppi and Luca.
Dickie was preceded in death by his son, Jesse; his father, Andy; and his brother, Kelly.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Daniel Mollin, Dr. Mark Jalkut, Dr. Alan Kritz, and Dr. Matthew Kappas. Their care and compassion were a blessing throughout this journey.
A Celebration of Dickie’s Life will be held on Saturday, July 19th, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27612), with a reception immediately following at Lynnwood Grill (4821 Grove Barton Road, Raleigh, NC 27613). Casual attire and NC State Wolfpack gear are welcome.
