Mrs. Rubye Powell Light died on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at Fairfax Senior Living on Falls of Neuse Road in Raleigh, NC. Mrs. Light was born on March 1, 1925 in Virginia to the late Lawrence Butler Powell and Elizabeth Finney Powell. She grew up in southwestern Virginia and graduated from Averett University with degrees in Music and Business. She married Carl Vania Light on July 27, 1945 and moved to Wake County, North Carolina, where she has since made her home.
Mrs. Light was a talented and dedicated musician and church leader. She served for over 60 years as the choir director, organist and pianist at Morrisville Baptist Church. In more recent years, she was the organist at Leesville Baptist Church. She has been a long-time Sunday School teacher and particularly devoted to the members of her class at Leesville Baptist Church. She looked forward to entertaining the class members in her home each Christmas.
Mrs. Light retired after many years of service in the office of the North Carolina State Treasurer. She worked as a retirement counselor with the North Carolina State Retirement System, conducting retirement seminars across the State.
She enjoyed reading, attending musical performances, entertaining, gardening and traveling.
Mrs. Light was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl V. Light; brother, L.B. "Bill" Powell; and sisters: Ruth Powell Gerry and Kathryn Powell Shropshire. She is survived by her son, Carl Eugene "Gene" Light; daughter-in-law, Evelyn; and by a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside Funeral Rites, officiated by Dr. Jo Ann Stancil, will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at 11 am in the Mausoleum Chapel of Raleigh Memorial Park (7501 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh). The family asks that masks still be worn. A recording of the service will be available on the Facebook Page of Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial park afterwards for those unable to attend.
