In Loving Memory of Sarah

It’s hard to put into words what a loss this is. I’m remembering when Sarah took me prospecting with her at the RDU airport, fearlessly approaching Uber drivers with purpose and joy. The woman was fearless—truly inspiring in every way.

Though I only had the blessing of knowing her for a short time, it was a pleasure and an honor. Patricia has shared so many beautiful memories of their time together, and each story reminds me of Sarah’s vibrant spirit and deep faith.

I’ll never forget the day she brought Patricia and me to her church. It was such a powerful, memorable service—an experience that lifted us all. Praise God for a life so full of love, courage, and conviction.

Dear Sarah,
It’s hard to say goodbye, so I attempt to write with the love and gratitude I carry in my heart. From the moment we met in Nigeria over a decade ago, I knew you were someone special. You were confident, kind, and full of LIFE. Our first project together, our "AEF",  marked the beginning of a friendship. You became my walking and work buddy in both Nigeria and Ghana.  Our conversations over our walks moved effortlessly between work, life, parenting, and faith. You shared your truth with clarity, warmth, and strength. Your advice was a compass, always honest (very direct :)) and always from a place of care. 

Your humor still makes me smile. You had a gift for connecting deeply with people and always making us laugh, even while offering the most direct feedback on all subjects :). And I appreciated your approach to being a mother!

You were generous with your time, your wisdom, and your heart. You always asked about my family and always listened. You built strong, lasting bonds with those around you, and I was honored to be part of your circle.

Even across continents, from Sudan to North Carolina, we stayed in touch, sharing stories, prayers, and  laughter. I’ll always remember celebrating milestones together, like your surprise birthday party your children planned for you in Abuja.

Through your work as a diplomat serving across West Africa and in El Salvador, you lived your values daily. You led with vision, spoke with grace, and inspired those around you, as a professional, a Toastmaster, and a friend.  You made such a profound difference in so many people's lives!

Sarah, your friendship was a gift to me and so many. You are already so deeply missed. I feel your energy near, watching over your family and friends. Flowers for Sarah 

You went with me to visit  Area 8 orphanage in Abuja during your time at USAID, Nigeria. By the time we visited twice,  you asked if that was the only orphanage in town. 
Your question prompted the discovery of City of Refuge Orphanage.  
During our first visit,  we met the children eating Indomie.
For lunch? This is not right! Not one to identify a problem and not offer  solutions,  you promptly provided money to buy 100 kilograms of beans to provide protein for the children.  Since then, we now consciously ensure that we mobilise to add protein to whatever food is donated during orphanage outreaches.
On behalf of children in the three orphanages we support in Abuja, thank so much Sarah for this noble gesture! May the angels bear you on their wings to Jesus bossom! May you find eternal rest and may your family be consoled. May God undertake for them and may they never lack anything good.

We gather here today with heavy hearts to honor and remember our dear friend, Sarah.

Sarah, we will forever miss you. Your beautiful smile could light up any room, and your passion—so fierce, so unwavering—was nothing short of contagious. You were more than just a friend or a colleague; you were a visionary. You saw what many could not. You dreamed of a better future for our communities, and you worked tirelessly to create change, especially in the financial industry you loved so much.

You believed in empowering people. You believed in showing others that they, too, could rise above their circumstances. You gave your heart, your time, and your wisdom to lift others up—and in doing so, you left a mark that can never be erased.

It’s so hard to accept that you are no longer with us. The loss is deep, and the grief is real. But even in our sorrow, we find comfort knowing that your legacy lives on in the lives you touched and the dreams you inspired.

Rest in peace, dear Sarah. Rest in heavenly peace. You may be gone from our sight, but you will never be gone from our hearts.

I had the pleasure of meeting Sarah and getting to know her when we served together in El Salvador about 10 years ago.
She always encouraged me to stop eating at my desk and join her outside for lunch. Honestly, it was the daily break that I didn't even know I needed. She was always good for a laugh and provided me with sound professional advice.

Sarah was such a positive and wonderful person. Her passing is being mourned by so many people in different corners of the world. She is missed.

In every lifetime, there are those rare souls whose presence feels like sunlight—steady, warm, and life-giving. Sarah Muwanga was such a soul.
Born with a gentle spirit and an indomitable strength, Sarah was not just a sister, but a confidante, a guide, and a safe place for many. Her laughter could lighten any heavy heart, and her words—always carefully chosen—carried wisdom far beyond her years. She was the kind of woman whose quiet acts of kindness left lasting marks, often noticed only in hindsight, but never forgotten.
To know Sarah was to witness grace in motion. Whether she was tending to the needs of a neighbor, mentoring a younger friend, or simply listening—truly listening—her love was constant and genuine. She never sought the spotlight, yet it followed her wherever she went, not because she demanded attention, but because she gave it so freely to others.

I will never forget the chats I had with Ridha and Mrs Sarah. We would laugh for hours and she always gave us the best advice. It was such a privilege to have met Mrs Sarah. She truly was a blessing to all who knew her.

Sarah: A Life That Lit the Way

As I remember and mourn the loss of an extraordinary soul, I find myself holding on to the essence of who Sarah was—a rare light in this world.

She wasn’t just my neighbor in Bukasa-Muyenga. She was my friend, my sister in spirit, and a constant source of warmth and wisdom. Her presence had a way of grounding you. She listened with her whole heart and spoke with intention, always leaving you better than she found you.

We used to run together up and down Muyenga Tank Hill—those early mornings filled with laughter, sweat, and conversations that lingered long after the sun rose. Sarah believed in movement, not just of the body, but of the spirit. She pushed us to care for ourselves, not only physically, but emotionally and mentally. To live deliberately. To dream loudly.

What set Sarah apart was not only her kindness, but her drive. She had a remarkable work ethic and a mind constantly reaching forward. She was an innovator—curious, bold, and full of ideas she pursued with fearless energy. As an entrepreneur, she built not just for herself but for others. She created paths where there were none, and opened doors for those who followed.

Even in illness, Sarah remained unshaken. When she called to tell me she was unwell, her voice was calm and full of hope. She chose courage over despair, strength over fear. That was Sarah—always seeing light in the dark, always holding on to something bigger than the moment.

The world has lost a true force. Her family has lost a jewel. We, her friends, have lost a radiant presence.

But she lives on—in the lives she touched, the ideas she brought to life, and the love she so freely gave.

You will never be forgotten, dear Sarah. Your light remains.

Remembering Sarah 

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our sister-in-law, Sarah, a woman who truly lit up every room she walked into.

Sarah had a personality that was larger than life. She wore her heart on her sleeve and never held back from saying exactly what she thought, brutally honest, but always real. You always knew where you stood with Sarah, and that is something we all loved and respected about her.

But beneath all that fire was a soft, kind and generous heart. She was the kind of person who gave freely - her time, love and laughter. She had this amazing ability to bring people together and make you feel like family, no matter who you were. Her spirit was full of joy and she lived life like every moment mattered, dancing, laughing, giving and loving with everything she had.

Sarah was a fighter, through and through and we all admired that spirit.  Strong, hardworking and determined, she met every challenge head-on and never gave up. Her resilience inspired us all.

To us, Sarah was more than a sister-in-law. She was family in every sense of the word... a friend, a listener, a firecracker and a source of endless love and support. She gave so much of herself to our family and we will never forget the way she made us feel.

Most of all, we thank her for the two beautiful children she brought into this world. They are her greatest legacy and in them, her spirit, her fire and her love will live on.

Sarah, thank you for everything -  your love, your honesty, your heart, your energy and your everything. We miss you more than words can say. May you rest in peace, knowing how deeply you were loved. Rest easy now. You will always be with us.

We are so saddened by the news but while we can do longer be with Sarah physically, she is with us in spirit! I thank God that our paths crossed in El Salvador. Goodness the only black people on many occasions and we sure had some good laughs with our experience! Especially when Hannah adopted Ridha as her big sister! We started our career together and again got to serve in Ghana. I admired Sarah’s strength, she spoke her mind, she worked hard and she put her energy towards what is important. When she told me she was moving on from the Foreign Service - I admired her even more! She had courage and thank goodness she got to work on things and gain experiences that she wanted. Sarah is a true example of a ‘woman with courage’ - a testimony of how we should live! She is dancing in heaven that I know! Preparing a place for her family. She loved you all so much - I can remember her talking for hours about Ridha and Rashad - her two gems and all the patient support of her dear Moses! Sending all of you hugs. My sincere condolences to Sarah's family.  I will always cherish the fond memories I have of Sarah that span over a period of 30 years. I first got to meet the entire Muwanga family in the early eighties, when they became our neighbors in Kisugu Muyenga. She may be gone but her spirit remains. Her essence lives on in the hearts of all the people she knew and touched. She had a kind and humble spirit. "Inna IiIIahi wa inna iIayhi raji'un"

Sarah Nakabugo Muwanga-Masagazi! 

Oh God, I cannot believe that I will never see you again or hear you call me Naka my name sake. You were a true inspiration to me . We arrived in Abuja a week apart in 2015 and we clicked  when we met almost like as though we had known each other much earlier. We always got our 5 min therapy every morning being able to speak our luganda before work got busy, a great ritual you coined wolokoso.

We laughed a lot, visited each other a lot, had our children play together a lot, partied together a lot and spoke a lot on many things about life that enriched our friendship . We had such a beautiful relation and I considered you the favorite sister I never had. You encouraged me to relocate to North Carolina when the time came, prepared me mentally , introduced me to the loving and warm Ugandan community in Durham that made our stay welcome. How can I forget you Naka!

In the most recent past, we changed jobs although our mission about service above self remained the same. Working in Abuja with you was such joy. Whenever we met wherever we met, we always genuinely enjoyed each other’s company. I was honored me to meet some of your Ugandan family that and you meeting mine. All our children were saddened by your passing and will miss you so much.
To Moses , thank you for loving Sarah in your special way and nursing her to the end of her life, she knew that! To Ridha and Rashad, your mum was so proud of the people you have become. Whenever we spoke about our children, her face lit up when she spoke about you both. Be comforted to know she was a proud Mother. 
To Ida and Nuru, thank you for allowing me to know your sister and sharing her great love and compassion. I am so sorry for loss. 

To the North Carolina Uganda family, thank you for taking care of Sarah in many ways and for many years! Ricky Mukungu you stood out in most of her speech, she respected you a lot.

I condol with the  whole family and I so believe God always picks the best
I will forever not forget the last time we met Sara though was in pain but she managed to give a peck to almost all her visitors that came together that day 
We shall miss your smile Sara,and your soft touches

Her last words to me, as we parted, were, please pray for me! It broke my heart but prayed I did! So unfortunate I shall not hear her greet me warmly again. May Allah receive her well

My Sarah, I am still fill with tears and not sure how I lost my sister, my friend, my boss  and my mentor. Such a couragous woman who stood for what is right and encouraged others to do same. Tears feels my ears each time I remember that death has laid its icy hands on my Sarah. Gone too soon but you are forever in our hearts. 💕 💞

Sarah was a living Angel on earth, She really represented her name, mother of the world, she an incredible friend, sister and mother. She was so kind to me, that I ask myself is this an Angel that escaped from Heaven.
She taught me how to be kind and nice to people, she was my favorite dance student, she dance with so much passion and with a priceless smile. She had her cross but she didn’t let it stop her from being kind to people. I have a lot to say but the tears in my eyes, won’t let me. My best wishes to the family

I lost my mother, well one of them. She taught me what it meant to be a girl/woman of purpose .Some how her soul and drive and my young dysfunction found home. She bought me my first lipstick, my first big girl bra. “Even on your worst day , you will run into you enemy make sure you look good .how you present yourself becomes who you are!” She prided her self on being a girls girl, she taught me how to be that….. literally. Showed up everywhere, anytime. She was there!!Gave me and my family a place to call home far far away from home. She was home anywhere in the globe…. The thought of her took you home, gave you peace and the courage to take space……May the lord grant her jannah and comfort her family through this tough time

In loving memory of my dear friend Sarah. I met Sarah through her sister Ida over 25 years ago in Georgia and from the very beginning, we shared a special connection. Sarah had a beautiful, genuine spirit one that radiated kindness, warmth, and an unwavering generosity. She had a heart that constantly sought to uplift others, always rooting for those around her to thrive and succeed. 

Throughout the years we shared countless conversations about our careers since we had pursued a similar path. We talked about our children and the future. Sarah was always quick to share useful information. One recent incident stands out in my long relationship with Sarah. In February 2024, I was going through a tough period. Sarah recruited me into her Financial Management business, and encouraged me professionally and financially to get my license and start building my own business. While I never ended up pursuing that particular business, it opened doors to another one. I am eternally indebted to Sarah and her sister Ida for the special friendship!

Losing her leaves a profound void, but I’m grateful for the time we had and the memories we created. Her light will continue to shine in the lives she touched. My prayers go out to her family in Uganda, in Raleigh especially the kids and Moses 🙏 may God give you comfort and peace!

Rest thee well, dear Sarah! You will be deeply missed but never forgotten! May the angels gladly receive you and may God bless you eternally!
