Steve is survived by his children, Shawn (Laura) Sremaniak of Raleigh, NC, Sandy (Jack) Sunderman of New Port Richey, FL, two grandchildren, Sarah and Joshua Sunderman, his sisters Karen (Timothy) Cochran and Kerry (Thom) Parker, his brother Keith (Kristine) Sremaniak, and many members of his wife’s family from Frankfurt and Berlin, Germany. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Inge of Heusenstamm, Germany and his parents, Steve and Louise Sremaniak.
Steve was born in Chicago, IL and since his father was a U. S. Air Force master sergeant, the family resided near multiple USAF bases as well as in Issoudon, France. After graduating high school in Hyannis, Massachusetts, he served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany where he met his wife, Inge. They moved to California for one year, then returned to Germany where Steve worked as a civilian for the Army, completed his business degree at the University of Maryland-Global Campus Germany and worked for British Airways in Load Control at Frankfurt Airport.
Steve and Inge’s home was always full of family and visitors, including many family members from the US. The family traveled extensively, with Malta and (the former) Yugoslavia being favorite destinations, as well as visits with family in the US. Steve was an active member of British Airways Silver Wing Club and enjoyed many activities with colleagues, especially squash and dragon boat competitions.
Steve was larger than life (fitting of his nickname, “Big Steve” and later “Jumbo Steve” among his British Airways colleagues) and often told anyone he would meet about his “container list” as a bucket was not big enough to hold all his plans. After moving back across the Atlantic, he settled with his son and daughter-in-law in Raleigh and was fond of going to outdoor concerts, fishing, playing poker with friends, daily trips to the dog park, and weekends at Hilton Head Island, SC. Steve loved all the family pets. Surviving him are the dog and cat, Albert and Ringo.
A family gathering is planned this fall on Hilton Head Island to celebrate his life.
The family wishes to thank the medical and support staff at Duke Raleigh for their compassionate care, and to the many friends and family for their support and many acts of kindness.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Friends of Wake County Animal Center (https://www.friendsofwakeanimals.org/donate) are appreciated by the family.
Service arrangements provided by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home & Crematory, 300 Saint Mary's St. Raleigh, NC.
