

She spent her formative years at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Orphanage located on what was then the outskirts of Raleigh, under the tutelage of the Sisters of Mercy. After graduating high school, she attended Sacred Heart Junior College in Belmont, NC for one year. She was employed by the NC Unemployment Compensation Commission from 1937-1944. On September 28, 1940, Teresa and Harry Stewart, of Washington, NC, were married at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Raleigh. They met at Nazareth, while both were living there.
Surviving are her husband of 72 years, Harry Eugene Stewart, and four children, Harry Eugene Stewart, Jr. (Gail), Mary Washington Cohn (Cass), Laurence Kerr Pelto (Monty), and Nancy Haywood Pezdek. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Harry Winchester Stewart; Tracy Cohn Miketa (Bill), Eliza Rachel Cohn (Amanda), Lydia Pelto Binanay (Jonathan), Jorma Blount Pelto (Devon), Stewart Arthur Pelto (Kristen), Cecelia Teresa Pezdek, and Rebecca Pezdek Robledo (Kevin); five great-grandchildren, Elliot Davis Miketa, Jonathan David Binanay, Téadora Kerr Binanay, Gabriella Basil Binanay, and Link Blount Pelto; nine nieces and nephews, Gilbert Stewart Goltra, Donald E. Stewart, Jr., William Blount Stewart, Michael D. Stewart, Patricia Stewart Chakales, Mary Jo Stewart Keller, Katie Stewart, Peggy Stewart, and Nathaniel Haywood Stewart, Jr.; and her extended family, Alyson Cohn and Larry Landsman, Jared Paul Landsman, Justin Dylan Landsman, Leslie Caryn Cohn, Michael Jonathan Cohn, and Andrew Julius Cohn.
She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Claudia Parsons, of San Francisco; niece, Marianne Parsons and great-nephew, Jaime Parsons McKinley of Tiburon, CA; nephew, Stephen Parsons and wife, Betsy, of Arizona; sister Jan Parsons Davis of Iowa; and niece Peggy Winston of West Australia; sister-in-law, Marjorie D. Stewart, as well as a number of great nieces and nephews.
Two brothers, William George Sapulos and Robert C. Parsons, predeceased her.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the care providers at Rex Rehab and Mayview for all their love and attention to Teresa.
A memorial service will take place Thursday, August 23, 2012, at 2:00 pm at Christ Church, Raleigh. A reception for family and friends will be held after the service in the church parish hall. Burial at Oakwood Cemetery will follow.
