Always a good student, Bill graduated from Cleary Elementary School, LaSalle Academy, and The University of Rhode Island. He served in the US Army where he was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He married the love of his life, Lillian Lucille Magnan, while he was in the military. Upon returning from service, he attended URI, earning a BS in English. After graduation he took a job with Domino Sugar on Wall St in New York City. He worked there his entire career. He retired as Vice President of Customer Service and Distribution. Bill was a devoted and loving family man who enjoyed reading, golf, and travel. Passions that he passed on to his children.
He is survived by his children, Bill Banahan Jr. and his wife Jackie, Mike Banahan and his wife Vicki, Steve Banahan and his wife Debbie, and Jean Marie Lange and her husband Mike. In addition, the surviving grandchildren are Kevin Banahan, Ryan Banahan, McKenzie Banahan, Delaney Lange, Griffin Lange, and Patrick Banahan. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Jim Banahan, Tom Banahan, Carol Rosner, Mark Flynn, Brian Flynn, Danny Flynn, Nancy Flynn, Stephen Flynn, Richard Hyland, David Hyland, Susan Vivian, Martha Jane Souther, Bob Crosby, and Leo Crosby. .
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brother James “Bud” Banahan, and his sister Mary Flynn.
A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC on October 23rd at 2:30 PM. To honor William, please wear a wee bit of green for the service. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, please use the link under 'donations' below. Masks or facial coverings are encouraged for all those in attendance.
