William Eagles (Bill) Moss, a longtime Raleigh resident, died March 21, 2025. He was born in Wilson, North Carolina, on September 17, 1930, and was the younger son of Rebekah Eagles and Howell Cobb Moss. He attended Charles L. Coon High School in Wilson, served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and, in 1956, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a member and past President of the Zeta Psi fraternity at UNC-CH.
In 1957, he married Patricia Warwick (Patti) Brown from Chattanooga, Tennessee. They immediately settled in Raleigh and started a family soon thereafter. Bill had a 35 year career in the electrical field, becoming Vice President and part owner of an electrical manufacturing sales company until his retirement in 1995. Bill and Patti were members of White Memorial Presbyterian Church since 1958. Bill was also a member of the Carolina Country Club, Terpsichorean Club, Sphinx Club, the Assembly, and St. Christopher’s Club. Spending time with his family and friends at Atlantic Beach, boating, fishing, and golfing were his happiest times.
Known as “Bullet” to his closest friends, the origins of this nickname have been shrouded in mystery for over 75 years, but seems to involve a test drive, a wreck and the runway at the old Wilson County Airport. More recently, he was lovingly known as “Big Bill” to his four granddaughters.
Bill was predeceased by Patti, his loving wife of over 67 years; and brother, Howell Cobb Moss, Jr.
He is survived by daughters, Anne Warwick Moss Werthmuller and her husband, Dr. Carey Werthmuller of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Patricia Eagles Moss (Tricia) LeCarpentier and her husband Edward Cook (Tacker) LeCarpentier III; as well as four granddaughters, Anna Michel Werthmuller, Erin Carey Werthmuller, Katherine Montagu LeCarpentier, and Grace Eagles LeCarpentier.
The family wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Bill’s caregivers at Magnolia Glen Retirement Community, Rex Hospital and, especially, Transitions HospiceCare.
Graveside services for family and friends were held at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, North Carolina, at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 28, 2025.
