William (Bill) Val Shumate, 95, departed this life peacefully, Saturday October 19, 2019 at home. Born on February 2, 1924, to William Valdimer and Zella Rudy Shumate, raised in Colorado, he had moved to North Carolina to live with his daughter Karol following the death of his wife of 72 years, Dona Jean a year ago.
Bill was a WW2 navy veteran serving as a FC2 on the destroyer escort, USS Rall, in the Pacific theater. When the war ended he returned to Denver, married, got his electrical engineers degree from the University of Colorado and began his career with the Boeing Aircraft Company where he worked for 32 years, living and traveling all over the world.
After retirement, he and Dona Jean returned to Colorado and settled in Bailey. He served as VFW post 8991 commander, helped organize Bailey Days and volunteered as a dispatcher with the fire Bailey fire department.
He is survived by his daughters, Sandra Jean McIntosh of Colorado and Karol Dee Fair (Christopher) of North Carolina, 5 grandchildren, 10 great grand children and 2 great -great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He made friends easily and was well loved everywhere he went. He was an avid chess player challenging anyone who wanted to play.
Internment and memorial service will be at Ft. Logan national cemetery, Denver Colorado along side his beloved wife at a later date.
A local memorial service in North Carolina will be held on Monday, October 28, 6:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 4272 US 401 Hwy North, Louisburg, NC 27549.
