

He was born July 27, 1920, in Akron, Ohio, to parents James B. and Ruth (Reese) Jones. John was a member of the “Greatest Generation”. He left for active service in the U.S. Army on his 22nd birthday. John served in the European Theatre operations and was awarded the Bronze Star for breaking up a German counter attack and also received the Purple Heart for being wounded in action.
Prior to being drafted, he worked laying the railroad track at the Ravenna Ordnance Plant. After completing military service, he returned to the Ravenna Arsenal working as a millwright and inspector until retiring in 1979.
John was a longtime member of Wayland Community Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher and deacon. He was an original scrap booker and enjoyed spending time working outside in his woods. His family was the most important part of his life.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years Doris (Retherford) Jones, and their children: Anna Crowl of Sebring, Susan (Mark) Hopton of Lake Helen, FL, Kathy (Melvin) Bryner of Paris Twp., John Paul (Gloria) Jones Jr. of Austintown, Mary (Les) Belloir of Paris Twp., and James (Debbie) Jones of Ravenna. His memory will also be cherished by 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Evelyn Haver, and his son-in-law Richard Crowl.
Friends will be received Saturday, October 25, 2014, from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at the Wayland Community Church, 6355 Wayland Rd., Ravenna, with Pastor J. Thomas Holbrook officiating the funeral service at 3:00 PM. Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery with military honors.
