Born in Ravenna, Ohio on February 6, 1929, he was the son of the late Frank and Margrette (Potter) Allman. A life resident of Ravenna, Robert was a 1947 graduate of Ravenna High School. As a youth, Robert attended and was a member of the Ravenna First Church of Christ Scientist. As his family was established, they worshipped at the Ravenna First United Methodist Church where he was an usher. He was also a Red Cross blood donor. Robert enjoyed a career as a machinist. He worked for Byers Machine and Ward-Riddle. He retired in 1994 from Allen Aircraft after 17 years of employment. Robert was a proud Army veteran serving in Korea.
On November 24, 1951, Robert married his best friend and love Marjorie (McKelvey) Allman. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to California and Robert left for Korea. Upon discharge from the Army, Robert and Marjorie returned to Ravenna and built their house. They enjoyed traveling that began in a tent trailer and then to their motor home. Together with good friends and family, they covered 48 states. He and Marjorie celebrated their 25th anniversary in Hawaii and visited special relatives in Alaska. They also hosted many get-togethers at their home. Their home was a place of laughter, fun and love.
Robert will be remembered for his kind, gentle and compassionate soul, his smile, his willingness to help others and his ability to remember everything. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He helped them build snowmen; he enjoyed playing Othello, dominoes and cards with them and attending their sporting events. Robert also enjoyed cooking, making homemade ice cream, mowing his lawn, collecting antique cars, feeding the birds, picking blueberries and playing volleyball. Robert was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians, the Ravenna Ravens football and basketball teams and John Wayne.
Attending the Ravenna Balloon-Affair was an event Robert always looked forward to every year. He spent many years as a member of a balloon chase crew, he had the opportunity to fly in a hot air balloon on several occasions and he drove his 1973 Cadillac convertible in the parade many times.
Robert was dedicated to his family. He loved them, respected them and was a perfect role model. He was the rock of his family.
Robert is survived by his wife of 68 years Marjorie (McKelvey) at home, his sons Jeffrey (Sandra) and Scott (Jane-Marie), both of Ravenna; grandchildren Thomas (Shannon) Milner, Andrew Milner, Stephen Allman, Annie Allman and Gracie Allman (deceased); great-grandchildren Benjamin Milner, Alyssa Milner, JR Milner and Brandon Milner and many cousins.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to the Woodlands and UH Portage Medical Center for their professional and loving care and to their many dear friends for their support. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Ravenna.
Private family graveside services will be held.
