Ronald Earl Smithberger

Ronald Earl Smithberger, passed away peacefully at his home in Rootstown on April 17, 2026, at the age of 91. He was born February 21, 1935, in Ravenna, Ohio, to parents Peter and Helen (Whittington) Smithberger. Ron grew up on the family vegetable farm in Franklin Township. He graduated from Kent State High School and then was drafted into the US Army.

Ron retired from the General Electric as a truck driver after 27 years of employment. After retirement, he enjoyed woodworking in his barn and traveling with his family. Some of his favorite stories to share were travelling to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and visiting Siesta Key, Florida, in the winter.

Ronald is survived by his two sons: David (Tina) Smithberger and Donald Smithberger, his two grandchildren: Michael (Sarah) Shannon and Ashley (Brady) Jones, as well as his three great-grandchildren: Kenley, Taylin, and Beckett. He is also survived by his sister Kay McGuire along with many nieces and nephews.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 51 years Shirley Smithberger, and his brother William Smithberger.

Friends and family will be received Friday, April 24, 2026, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM with a funeral service officiated by Pastor Vince Maltempi, DMin, at 11:00 AM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E.
