

He was born on October 17, 1923 in Reading PA a son of the late Walter F. and Emma (Ganser) Castor.
Howard married LaRene K. (Bice) Castor on June 28, 1952 in Reading PA. They have 3 children: Linda S. Mondschien, Cathy A. and her husband Robert Sweeney and Karen A. and her husband Darryl Mayeski, 3 grandchildren; Ashley Mondschein, Lindsay Mondschein and Matthew Mondschein, and was predeceased by sister, Dorothy (Ganser) Plunkett widow of William.
Howard attended the U.S. Merchant Marines Academy, Kings Point, NY from 6/43 to 2/45 and while at the academy as part of his training, he sailed asa a deck cadet and midshipman from 9/43 to 4/44 on U.S. Merchant ships sailing the Atlantic, Caribbean and Pacific Oceans. Upon graduation from the academy, he sailed as 3rd, 2nd and chief mate on U.S. Merchant ships until 9/47. From 11/5/48 to 8/49, he served in the U.S. Navy.
Howard worked for the Atlantic Refining Co. (ARCO) for 37 years retiring in 1985, and after retirement he worked for Fleetwood Transport & Trading Co. as a consultant for 13 years.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Kingston, PA., since 1967. He served on the church council and was president of the council and served on other positions for the church. He joined Kiwanis International in 1986 where he served as president and two times as secretary-treasure. In 2004 he joined the Wilkes Barre Kiwanis Club and served as president of the Wilkes-Barre Kiwanis Wheel Chair Club since 2008. Around the summer 0f 1995, he joined the Directors of Al Beech/West Side Food Pantry and served as vice-president and then president for 3 years.

Graveside Services will be Wednesday December 20, 2023 at 11am in Forest Hills Memorial Park, 391 W. Neversink Rd Reading PA 19606.
