Joseph G. McDermott, 86, of Reading, entered into eternal life on Monday, August 26, 2013 after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He passed away at home with his loving wife, Donna M. (Cavallucci) McDermott, at his side.
He was born on October 31, 1926 in Leadwood, MO, son of the late William B. and Paula (Settle) McDermott.
Joseph was the former secretary-treasurer of the former Coatesville Plate Washer Co., Coatesville, former vice president of the former R.L. Batteiger Co., Philadelphia, and lastly at St. Joseph Living Center, Laureldale, as Manager of Services.
He graduated from Bok Vocational High School in Philadelphia. He attended Syracuse University and Villanova University after serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II as a navigator on a B-24 Bomber with the rank of Lieutenant.
Joseph coached CYO Youth baseball, football and basketball teams in Delaware County and Main line leagues for many years. He was head softball coach at Archbishop Wood High School in Bucks County for 10 years and elected to the school's Hall of Fame in 2005.
He was an avid golfer; he organized the men's senior league at Green Acres Golf Club in 2008 and served as commissioner of that league until his death. He also was a member of American Mensa.
In addition to his wife, Donna; he is survived by four sons: Dennis and Daniel, both of Springfield; Joseph Jr., of Sierra Vista, AZ; and Kevin of Doylestown; and two daughters: Eileen McCauley of Drexel Hill and Maryann Perna of West Chester. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was the last remaining survivor of his 10 siblings.
Joseph was predeceased by his first wife, Anne (Cumberton) McDermott; two sons, Christopher and Thomas; and a daughter, Kathleen.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. in St. Ignatius Loyal RC Church, 2810 St. Albans Dr., Reading, PA 19608 on Saturday, August 31, 2013. Family and friends will be received on Saturday from 8 to 10:00 a.m. in Theo C. Auman Funeral Home, 247 Penn St., Reading, PA 19601. Burial will follow the Mass in Gethsemane Cemetery, Reading.
