Rev. Geneva Carter-Burns, 87, of Wilmington, DE., went home to her Lord and Savior on Saturday April 17, 2021 in her residence. She was predeceased by her 1st husband, Deacon Joseph N. Carter, Sr. and her 2nd husband, Dr. Roosevelt Burns. She was born in Wilmington, N.C., a daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Moses Thomas.
Her many accomplishments included being the first African American woman pastor in Berks County with serving Church of Deliverance at 1327 N. 10th St Reading PA 19604, for 60 years, the first woman ever to have a prison ministry at Berks County Prison which she ministered men & women for 15 years. Rev. Carter-Burns was the first woman to preach in the Reading & Vicinity Ministerial Assoc., the first female member of the Reading Council of Churches, & the United Missionaries of Reading & Vicinity and had a ministry in Berks County Nursing home for 15 years.
Surviving are 6 children; Joseph, Jr., Ann, Lois, Cassandra, Jeremiah and Ezra, 5 grandchildren and 6 gt. grandchildren. She was a Pioneer in delivering her Father's word to his people and has opened many doors for women of the cloth in making changes. We will be forever grateful for her perseverance with the lives she's touched.
Funeral services were Saturday 5-1-2021 in Wilmington, DE. Local Memorial Services will be Saturday May 15, 2021 at 2pm in Theo C Auman Funeral Home, 247 Penn St Reading. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Church of Deliverance at above address. www.theocauman.com
