

John S. Coats was born June 15, 1924 to James Coats and Else Throne in Bernice, Oklahoma. He was one of 13 children. John and his wife moved to Redding in November 1947.He passed away peacefully at home in Redding on March 22, 2012 with his wife of 68 years Marie Coats by his side, he was 87 years old. John has left a legacy starting with his son Johnny Coats (spouse Marlene Coats) of Cottonwood, son Lonnie Coats (spouse Bonnie Coats) of Redding, and daughter Donna McIndoo (fiancé John Swartz) of Redding. He has 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Curtis Coats, Sr. of Redding, and Elmer Coats of Arcadia FL. John retired as a millwright from Champion Plywood of Redding after 36 years. He was a US Army Corporal in the 555th Timber Wolf Division, receiving the Bronze Star during his service in W.W.II, he was also a life member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenter & Joiners Union of America, and a former member of Shasta Bee Keepers. He loved hunting, ranching, fishing, just being outdoors and was always proud of the yearly vegetable garden. A visitation is set for Wed, March 28th from 3PM-6PM at Lawncrest Chapel in Redding. Funeral services will be held Mon, April 2nd at 10AM also at Lawncrest Chapel with graveside services at Lawncrest Memorial Park.
