When he was 17 years old, he started surveying with USFS. From there he continued his career as a Civil Engineer working for 40 years with the USFS in the Shasta Trinity National Forest.
Marshall enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating. At age 57 he took up golfing and continued to enjoy it for many years.
In the late 60's Marshall and Dick Almgren were on a trail with pack horses and mules heading into Black Rock Look-out in the Yolla Bolla Wilderness to deliver supplies. On the trail a deer ran between the lead horse and pack mules right in front of Marshall's horse. The horse threw him off on the downhill side .... last time Marshall ever got on a horse.
