Richard Michael (Dick) Pierce, Sr. was born and raised in Detroit,Michigan, graduated Visitation High School in Detroit, MI in 1951. He was employed at Garwood Industries for several years which led him to move to Decatur, Georgia and eventually settled in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Dick became the first 911 and EMA Director for Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. He served as Director of Emergency Management from 1971- 1995 and the director of the Tuscaloosa County Emergency Communications District from 1986-2001. Serving a dual role as Director of both agencies from 1986-1995. He was instrumental in establishing the foundation for both 911 and EMA to provide emergency services for the citizens of Tuscaloosa County. The Emergency Management of Tuscaloosa is now located in Northport, Alabama on "Richard M. Pierce Parkway," named in his honor. He will be missed by family and friends but His legacy lives on.
He is preceded in Death by his father, Harry R. Pierce, Sr. of Detroit, MI and mother, Christina McKay Pierce of Detroit,MI; sister, Donna Pierce Burke Parks of Winchester, Virginia.
He is survived by his daughters, Pamela Pierce Karski (Phillip) of Woodstock, Georgia, Laura Pierce Ross (Allen) of Slidell, Louisiana, Cynthia (Cindy) Pierce Porter (Bobby) of Vance, Alabama, Denise Pierce Barnett of Braselton, Georgia, and Carrie Pierce Jones (Frank) Taylorsville, Georgia; and son, Richard Michael Pierce, Jr (Arta) of Covington, Ohio; sister, Dolores Pierce Staub (the late Larry) Sun City West, Arizona and brother, Harry R Pierce, Jr. (the late Kathryn) of Livonia, Michigan; numerous nieces and nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
A visitation for Richard will be held Thursday, November 9, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Memory Chapel Funeral Home, 2200 Skyland Blvd East, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35405, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM.
Richard will be laid to rest with his family on Monday, November 13, 2023 in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield, Michigan.
