Donald "Don" MacMillan

On September 1, 2026, Angus Donald MacMillan passed away peacefully with his loving wife, Gail, by his side. Don and Gail had been together for 60 years and were married for almost 57 years. Although he would jokingly refer to mom as his “first wife”, she was the love of his life. They were true partners. A formidable team. The best of friends.

Dad was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1947. He was the fourth Angus in his family which is probably why he quickly became known as Don. Dad met mom in Brandon in the Fall of 1966 and followed her to Winnipeg in 1968. In 1979, they moved to Regina and have lived here ever since.

Don was a loving father to three children - Heather, Laurel and David. Kelly joined the MacMillan clan in 1992. Then, in 2000, 2003 and 2008, dad’s family role evolved and he became an incredible Poppa to Mckay, Bella and Annalise. Although we lost David in 2011, when he was just 20 years old, the MacMillan family remained strong.

Dad had a wickedly sarcastic sense of humour that he fortunately handed down to his children and grandchildren. As Annalise would often tell him “Poppa…you need serious help”. We always knew when dad was going tell one of his terrible dad jokes – which came to be known as “poppa-isms”. The twinkle in his eye and the slight smirk on his face would always give him away. Even in the hospital, he maintained his sense of humour. When a specialist asked him if he remembered how old he was, dad answered “old enough to know better, young enough to do it again”. When dad reached the point when he wasn’t able to tell us jokes anymore, we could see that slight smirk on his face when we would throw a “poppa-ism” back at him.

Dad was a salesman by trade and personality. He made many a sale because he could spin a good yarn and tell a good (probably bad) joke to his customers.

Outside of work, Dad was an avid genealogist, tracing multiple branches of our family tree back hundreds of years to the highlands of Scotland. We purposely omitted the traditional “predeceased by” section in this tribute because when you have a family tree dating back to the 1700s on the Isle of Harris, listing those who passed before dad would make for a lengthy read.

Dad will be fondly remembered and forever missed. We were so fortunate to have had him in our lives.

Family and friends are warmly invited to a celebration of dad’s life on September 19, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. at the Victoria Avenue Funeral Home – 2080 East Victoria Avenue.
