On August 19, 2011, in her ninetieth year, the life of Frances Irene Chant (nee MacNeill) came to a peaceful close at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina, Saskatchewan. During her long lifetime she lived purposefully, loved and cared for others and she was in turn, loved by all who knew her. Fran was born in Regina on August 1, 1921 and continued to reside in that city for the greatest part of her life. As the eldest of six children growing up in the depression years, she had many adult responsibilities at an early age. Fran quickly learned the lessons of faith, hard work, thrift and perseverance. Having graduated from Scott Collegiate and Success Business College, she entered the work force as a stenographer at J. I. Case Company in 1941. After the War years, she met her husband to be, John, through a company sports league. Shortly after their marriage, she left her employment to become a full-time homemaker. Together, she and John provided a nurturing home environment for their daughters Bonnie and Susan. Fran’s greatest pride and strongest focus was her family. Throughout the years many happy moments were spent gardening, entertaining, playing bridge and enjoying the cottage at Regina Beach. Family, friends and neighbors were an especially significant part of their enjoyment during this time period. When her children were older, Fran returned to the work force as a customer care representative at Sears, where she enjoyed the challenges and rewards of her position. Fran was an ongoing member of the Womens’ Church circle at St. Andrews and Rosemont United Churches. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School and leading various youth groups, including Explorers and C. G. I. T. Fran was an avid, lifelong reader of diverse material, an interest which no doubt helped to explain her skill at crossword puzzles. Another interest, letter writing, resulted in beautifully composed cards and letters, which were a joy to receive. Upon John’s retirement, winter months were spent in Mesa, Arizona. New adventures, the company of lifelong friends and family, as well as the forging of new friendships made being a “Snowbird” a very special experience. Additional road trips across the USA, especially those featuring casinos, were highlights for both Fran and John. Becoming a grandmother (Nana) to Lindsey and Caitlin filled her with delight. Fran loved every minute of being a part of their lives and seeing them grow into the fine, young women they are today. Fran had great “presence” all of her life and she always took a genuine interest in other people. We are grateful that she shared her many stories with us before she passed on. As a wife and mother, she left us with a rich family history and deep roots which will not be lost. Fran was predeceased by her parents, Alex and Clara MacNeill, and all of her siblings, Marjorie, Lloyd, Morley, Dorothy and Glen. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 63 years, John, daughters Bonnie (Dennis) Larsen, Susan (Daryl) Brock, grandchildren Lindsey (Sean) and Caitlin Brock, sisters-in-law Marion MacNeill, Elda Dyck , Lorraine (Johnny) Hanson and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family wishes to thank the many health professionals at the Pasqua Hospital Long Term Care Unit who provided compassionate care to Fran during her final days. We take comfort in knowing that family members and friends who enjoyed her company and supported her endeavors in life will hold their fond memories of Fran close to their hearts. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place (arrangements by Lee Funeral Home). In celebration of her life, a gathering will be held at a later date, to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated. Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.leefunerals.com .
